A quick search for “Decluttering and Organising” on YouTube can send you down a rabbit hole of content – from Shorts of cluttered spaces getting organised in the snap of a finger to hour long videos of massive decluttering projects. This is to say nothing of the podcasts, Instagram reels, Tik-Toks, and Netflix shows which are entire worlds in themselves; worlds that thrive on the thousands, if not the millions of views, likes, and comments that their subscribers bless them with. It seems that the internet can’t keep its hands off from pressing play on another ASMR organisation video or a decluttering podcast! It all starts with one or two videos to get ideas and inspiration – DIY cleaning hacks, how-to guides, must-have solutions, budget-friendly tricks…you only have to think about what you need, before the content starts showing up on your feed! But even after we have gathered enough ideas and information to get started, we are still drawn to more such content. Why’s that? It’s not like it tackles the stuff in our homes!

So, we did some asking around on the internet. And here’s what we heard:

“For me, it’s calming because it implies a sense of control”, says a Reddit user who explains that a tidy space feels like a nucleus of comfort and order in a chaotic world. Of course, who can resist the satisfaction of colour coded drawers, neatly labelled containers and aesthetically organised wardrobes – they are a sight for sore eyes! But for many people, it doesn’t stop with the visual treat. One of the most popular answers on the thread said, “it inspires me to organize, clean, and declutter”. For most people, decluttering and organising videos are the gentle nudges that they need to begin working on their own spaces. It is also inspiration to keep their homes uncluttered in the long run. Managing a household, and an organised one at that, is a process that demands consistent efforts. Videos and pictures of spotless, well-organised homes is what fuel up most people to keep their own spaces groomed and clutter-free.

Not all home management channels are always about aesthetics either. Videos that break down difficult processes and offer effective and creative solutions to every day struggles garner millions of views, and rightfully so. A redditor says “She broke it down in steps and made it seem so simple, fun, and fast”, referring to a video she watched of a woman cleaning the shower. Inspiring clarity, in whatever small way, is never a small feat!

Decluttering videos offer more than just ideas – they show possibility. Putting words to a sentiment expressed by many others, a reddit user says “it’s aspirational – it shows us what we can do!” The mess isn’t ours, the effort isn’t ours either. But it still pleases us by offering the possibility of achieving the satisfaction that comes from getting things in order. Hence, the internet’s love for before-after picture sequences of home makeovers and organisation projects. However, netizens agree that aspiration translates to action only when the content becomes relatable. Fancy households that look like a Pinterest page are visually satisfying, but as a redditor states, “I want actual relatable content, as close to my living and personal situation as possible.” Not all homes are similar, and most people out there are looking for solutions that work for them and not against their life situations.

Running a household can be overwhelming. And sometimes, what you need to be able to get through mundane tasks is a voice – calm, wise and reassuring – that reminds you that you are not alone in the process. This explains the love that netizens shower on realistic videos of influencers and internet personalities decluttering their own homes, prompting their viewers to join them in the process. Echoing several comments that regularly grace ‘Declutter with me” videos, one Reddit user says, “They keep me company while cleaning. Doing it all by myself is too lonely and therefore daunting.” And that is what it all boils down to – our innate tendency, as human beings, to seek out comfort in companionship. The knowledge that we aren’t alone, that we have company out there!
